TitleArgentiferous bornite and malachite from Rainy Hollow, northern British Columbia
DescriptionThe green mineral is malachite, Cu2(CO3)(OH)2. It is a secondary mineral of copper, which means it is forms by alteration of other (primary) copper minerals. Malachite is often associated with other copper minerals; in this sample, it is found with bornite (bronze tarnished mineral in center of specimen). Bornite has compositon Cu5FeS4. Malachite and bornite are both important copper ore minerals. Malachite sometimes forms spectacular mineral specimens that are used as gems or in art. Bornite is generally less exciting, although tarnishing sometimes gives it a purply “peacock” coloration. This sample is 8 cm wide.
