Title | Bismuthinite and pyrite from Tasno, Bolivia |
Description | This sample (8 cm across) contains both bismuthinite and pyrite. The golden colored pyrite is easy to see, but the gray bismuthinite is tougher to pick out. Pyrite, FeS2 (iron sulfide), is the classic “Fool's Gold”. There are other shiny brassy yellow minerals, but pyrite is the most common. Bismuthinite, Bi2S3 (bismuth sulfide), is a relatively nondescript (and uncommon) steel gray mineral, but is an important ore of bismuth. |
