Description | This sample (6 cm across) contains both bismuthinite and pyrite. Bismuthinite has a steely gray color when fresh, but tarnishes to become yellowish. In this sample it is hard to distinguish from the golden colored pyrite. Bismuthinite, Bi2S3 (bismuth sulfide), is relatively nondescript and uncommon, but is an important ore of bismuth. Pyrite, FeS2 (iron sulfide), is the classic “Fool's Gold”. There are other shiny brassy yellow minerals, but pyrite is the most common. |
