TitleCovellite and pyrite
DescriptionCovellite, CuS (copper sulfide), is not a widely distributed mineral. It is, however, well known for its color, metallic indigo blue when fresh. Tarnishing adds various hues of purple and it may show iridescence involving yellow and red. Good individual crystals are rare; generally it is massive and forms with other sulfides (golden pyrite in this specimen). Covellite is a copper ore mineral. This specimen is about 5 cm across.
