DescriptionThis sample contains mostly fine grained chalcocite, Cu2S (one kind of copper sulfide). Although somewhat rare, chalcocite is an important copper ore mineral that has been mined for centuries. In this specimen, 10 cm across, it is accompanied by a small amount of vivid green malachite, Cu2(CO3)(OH)2 (copper carbonate hydroxide).
