DescriptionGalena (PbS) often forms as dark gray cubes; the cubic characteristic can be seen here. Good cleavage and high density also make it easy to identify. The atomic arrangement in galena is identical to that in halite, NaCl. So, crystals of the two (although different in other ways) have similar shapes and cleavages. Galena is a major ore of lead (Pb). This sample is 14 cm across.
