Description | Molybdenite (MoS2) often occurs as flaky aggregates, with crystals that are thin and hexagonal. Sometimes (this sample) the molybdenum flakes lie along veins. The veins in this specimen are hosted by granite - a typical occurrence for molybdenite. Molybdenite, a soft metallic mineral, is a primary ore of molybdenum. It can be confused with graphite but graphite has a darker black-silver color and a black-gray to brown-gray streak. Molybdenite has a bluish-silver color and streak. This specimen i 7 cm across. |
