TitleMolybdenite from Hida, Japan
DescriptionThis small sample (4 cm across) contains silvery molybdenite and tarnished yellow-brown chalcopyrite. Molybdenite, MoS2 (molybdenum sulfide), is a very soft metallic mineral that often comes in sheets like a mica. It may be confused with graphite because they both have a grayish color and shiny luster. Molybdenite, however, tends to be more metallic and graphite does not form as flexible books having a mica-like characteristic. Molydenite is very soft and has a greasy feel. It is prized as an ore mineral of molybdenum. This specimen is 9 cm across.
LocationJapan. Near Hida.
