Title | Cinnabar in sandstone from Arkansas |
Description | Cinnabar, HgS (mercury sulfide), is often a very colorful mineral that may be brick-red to scarlet or pink. Rarer samples are brown or gray. This specimen, containing small cinabar crystals in a sandstone, has an atypical color. Most specimens of cinnabar are either fine grained, like this one, or large and massive. Large euhedral (well developed) crystals are uncommon and the twinned crystals are considered classics among collectors. Cinnabar is an ore mineral of mercury. This specimen is about 11 cm across. |
