TitleMorrison and Mancos in Valley
DescriptionThe foreground in this picture contains weathered Morrison Formation (Jurassic; here appearing slightly purple) with Mancos Shale (Cretaceous) on the flat valley bottom. The cliffs in the background are formed from members the Mesa Verde Group (Upper Cretaceous). The Mancos is a marine shale; the Mesa Verde Group contains some lower sandstone layers, overlain by siltstone with coal, and capped by more sandstone. It was deposited along the shore of the Cretaceous sea as it shallowed and retreated eastward.
