| Description | This specimen is 13 cm wide and is all marcasite, FeS2 (iron sulfide). The maracasite has a coxcomb habit which is typical. Marcasite is a polymorph (same composition but different atomic arrangement) of pyrite, its more common cousin. The marcasite shown here is tarnished, but when fresh has a bright golden metallic color. |
