Title | Anthophyllite from Gainsville, Georgia |
Description | This 13 cm long sample is fibrous anthophyllite, (Mg,Fe)7Si8O22(OH)2 (magnesium iron silicate hydroxide). Anthophyllite, a member of the amphibole group, is found in some metamorphic and metasomatic rocks. Although it can be differentiated from other amphiboles by its white to brown color, when differently colored it is indistinguishable from other amphiboles such as cummingtonite. Like serpentine, some forms of anthophyllite are asbestos-form and can be used as asbestos. |
