| Description | This orthoclase (KAlSi3O8) crystal is about 7 cm across. Actually it is two crystals grown together as a “twin.” Orthoclase is a feldspar, and twinning is common in all feldspars. Orthoclase twins by different “laws” including the Carlsbad Law, the Manebach Law and the Baveno Law. Shown here is a Carlsbad twin, equivalent to two intergrown crystals growing in opposite directions. |
