Title | Navajo Sandstone, Wingate Sandstone, Chinle Formation, and Moenkopi Formation exposed in a cliff, Capitol Reef National Park |
Description | This photo shows the Moenkopi Formation (red castellated outcrop near bottom of cliff), overlain by the Chinle Formation (grennish to red slope), overlain by the steep Wingate Sandstone cliff. In the far distance, just barely visible is the whitish Navajo Sandstone. All are of Triassic age, although in some parts of Utah the Navajo Sandstone is considered Jurassic. The Moenkopi Fm. is a product of tidal-flat deposits and so is highly variable over short vertical distances. The shales of the Chinle Fm. contain petrified wood. The Wingate Sandstone and the Navajo Sandstone, both members of the Glen Canyon Group, are aeolian sands. They are separated by the Kayenta Fm., but it is not visible in this picture. |
