Title | Native mercury, cinnabar and calomel |
Description | This sample contains gray mercury (liquid, Hg), reddish cinnabar (mercury sulfide, HgS) and yellow calomel (mercury chloride, HgCl). It is 6 cm across. Mercury is unique, as it is the only metal that is liquid at room temperature, having a melting point of -40 C, and a boiling point of 357 C. Mercury may be found in open spaces in rocks, in veins or as coatings. It is dense and has a high surface tension that causes it to form in small perfect spheres. |
