Title | Graphite schist |
Description | This is a sample of a highly altered graphite schist. Most of the dark colored material seen is graphite; the ochre colored material is limonite (iron oxide hydroxide). Graphite is common but usually exists as a very minor mineral component of a rock. It is mined from veins and use to make lubricants and pencil “lead” and for other indusrial purposes. |
