Title | Native iron and magnetite in basalt from Oahu, Hawaii |
Description | This basalt sample contains pieces of what appears to be native iron. Some of the iron has oxidized to produce magnetite and hematite. However, natural iron is probably not “native” to Earth since it rarely occurs on the Earth's surface by terrestrial processes. It is mostly derives from meteorites that have impacted the Earth's surface. This specimen is about 7 cm across. |
