Title | Sulfur and pyrolusite |
Description | This sample contains mostly yellow sulfur. The darker mineral is pyrolusite (manganese oxide) that precipitated in a crack. Sulfur is one of a small number of elements that can exist in its native (nearly pure) state as a mineral. Many sulfur specimens make beautiful mineral specimen, and fine quality examples are much sought after. The unmistakable deep yellow color is not matched by many other minerals although orpiment and some uranium minerals come close. Some sulfur specimens contain spectacular euhedral crystals, but the one shown here does not. This specimen is 6 cm across. |
