Title | Rhodochrosite and quartz from Butte, Montana |
Description | The pink and salmon colored mineral is rhodochrosite, MnCO3, a member of the calcite group. The salmon coloration is a thin film of oxidation only. The white material is quartz. Rhodochrosite most commonly forms in hydrothermal veins, often associated with sulfide ore minerals. This sample is from a hydrothermal deposit at Butte, Montana. Besides rhodochrosite and quartz, this specimen also contains enargite, pyrite and covellite, but they are hard to pick out because they are so fine grained. This photo is about 14 cm across. |
