Title | Smithsonite, from Zacatecas, Mexico |
Description | Smithsonite, ZnCO3 (zinc carbonate) is often identified by its green color. Many samples are darker green than the one shown here. Color, however, can be confusing, and smithsonite can be many other colors besides green. It is a carbonate mineral, found as a secondary mineral in the oxidization zone of zinc ore deposits. It can also be found in sedimentary deposits and as a direct oxidization product of sphalerite. This sample is 9 cm across. |
