| Description | Calcareous tufa, also called calcareous sinter, sinter, or just tufa, is composed of calcium carbonate (calcite or argonite) that precipitates at hot springs or associated with organic material in caverns. Tufa is a name given to rocks deposited by hot springs or streams. The term generally applies to deposits of calcite, but sometimes has been used to describe silica deposits as well. A hard, dense, variety of tufa is termed travertine. |
