Description | The dark mineral in this specimen is vivianite, Fe(PO4)2·8(H2O). It is accompanied by flakes of silver muscovite. Vivianite has vibrant colors and a nice sparkle when fresh. Exposure to light rapidly makes it dark colored or even black (this sample). Vivianite is common as a secondary mineral in the ore deposits, in pegmatites, and in sedimentary deposits association with organic materials. Many clusters are found inside fossil clam or snail shells or attached to fossil animal bone. This specimen is 14 cm across. |
