Title | Aragonite from Tasna, Bolivia |
Description | The dark gray mineral is aragonite. Aragonite is an orthorhombic mineral, but twinning often leads to an apparent hexagonal-prismatic shape, as in this sample. Aragonite is a polymorph of calcite, meaning it has the same composition but different structure and crystal shape. At the Earth surface, aragonite is thermodynamically less stable than the more common calcite, but it often forms by some disequilibrium processes. This specimen is 4 cm across. |
