Title | Polished slab of travertine |
Description | Travertine forms at hot springs when warm waters rich in calcium carbonate bubble up and cool, precipitating calcite. Although travertine is always a form of calcite, it generally appears banded because different layers grow under different conditions and may have slightly different chemistries. Travertine is often used as an ornamental or building stone but is quite soft. |
