Description | Gypsum, CaSO4•2H2O, is found in many places. Often it is massive and fine grained. Fine grained white varieties are called alabaster. Fibrous varieties are called satin spar. Coarser, clear bladed varieties are called selenite. This sample falls between: it is bladed but the blades are coated with fine crystals and are not clear enough to be called selenite. The specimen is 8 cm across. |
