Title | Gypsum (selenite), CaSO4•2H2O |
Description | Gypsum is found in many places, but often it is massive and has a whitish color. Fine grained white varieties are called alabaster. Fibrous varieties are called satin spar. Clear varieties, such as the one shown, are called selenite. Selenite can be found as layers or crack fillings in sedimentary rocks, often associated with red beds. It also forms bladed crystals in soils when it precipitates from groundwater. This blade is 11 cm across. |
