TitleMassive barite
DescriptionAlthough many of the most spectacular samples of barite are individual crystals or bladed aggregates in interesting shapes, barite is sometimes a rock-forming mineral. Here we see a piece of a chemical sedimentary rock almost entirely made of fine grained barite. Massive barite forms by precipitation, in a manner analagous to gypsum or anhydrite beds. This sample is 8 cm across.
