| Description | The dark mineral is vivianite, the reddish-earthy mineral is limonite. Vivianite is a hydrated iron phosphate mineral; limonite is iron hydroxide. When fresh, vivianite may appear blue, green or clear and have a vibrant sparkle. When exposed to light, as this sample was, it darkens. To preserve its beauty it should be stored in a dark cabinet. This specimen is 6 cm across. |
