Title | Brown marble, from near Knoxville, Tennessee |
Description | Marbles (metamorphosed limestones or dolostones) are typically white, but just about any color is possible. Microscope examination of this sample reveals that it was a biogenic limestone prior to metamorphism. The brown color, at least in part, appears due to organic matter that survived metamorphism. Some hematite is also present and adds some red to the color. This sample is 8 cm wide. |
