DescriptionHornfels is a general term describing a fine-grained metamorphic rock that displays no metamorphic fabric. Hornfels typically forms by contact metamorphism. This sample was originally a mudstone or shale, but recrystallized somewhat during metamorphism. The degree of metamorphism was quite low. The sample is about 10 cm across.
