Title | Flint, from near Dover, England |
Description | This is a sample of flint from near Dover, England. Flint is a dark variety of chert. It is mined from layers and seams in chalk units, including the famous White Cliffs of Dover. Early peoples used it to fashion arrow heads and cutting tools, and flint artifacts are found in many places. Near where Dover Castle is today, Romans built a 80 feet high flint lighthouse on the remains of an iron age fort. This sample is 9 cm across. |
