Title | Basalt from Vantage |
Description | This is a typical basalt: dark colored and fine grained. The minerals present cannot be identified by looking at this hand specimen. Geologists use a sort of deductive reasoning: they know what minerals are present because they can identify this as a basalt. Even using a microscope, minerals are hard to identify. Most of this rock is exceptionally fine grained but it does contain a few coarser lathes of plagioclase and clinopyroxene. |
