TitleHypersthene gabbro
DescriptionThis hand specimen is typical of a gabbro: a dense dark rock composed of grains of pyroxene (dark) and plagioclase (light) up to 1 cm across. Thin section viewing also reveals the presence of hornblende, biotite and magnetite. In thin section, however, the dominant pyroxene appears to be hypersthene (not the standard augite that defines a gabbro). Ward’s Scientific calls this a hypersthene gabbro, but a more appropriste name might be norite or gabbronorite. The specimen is about 9 cm across.
