DescriptionThis is a typical sample of weathered basalt from near Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Hawaii. It contains coarse crystals of black pyroxene and somewhat smaller crystals of green (weathered to brown) olivine. The individual mineral crystals are hard to see if you do not look at an enlarged view. The specimen is about 7 cm across.
