Description | Franklinite is a member of the spinel group and has formula ZnFe2O4. It is an important ore mineral of zinc and iron. Specimens from Franklin, New Jersey, often contain rounded black grains of franklinite surrounded by white calcite – as in this photo. Franklinite is also sometimes associated with greenish willemite and red zincite. In this photo, the largest franklinite crystal has an octahedral shape (although the edges of the crystal are rounded). |
