TitleLanders earthquake scarp, Mojave Desert, southern California
DescriptionLanders earthquake scarp, Mojave Desert, southern California. This spectacular fault scarp developed during a single earthquake that occurred on June 28, 1992 at 4:58am. The fault trends north/northwest and as the slide shows, has both lateral and vertical components of offset. You can see north-plunging slickensides on the fault surface (view to southeast). These relations indicate about 5 m of right-lateral motion and over 2 m of horizontal offset. The picture was taken one week after the quake and subsequent erosion of the soft material has largely since obliterated these features.
