Title | Deformation of aplite experiment |
---|---|
Description | Thin section of an aplite (fine-grained granite, composition roughly 1/3 each quartz, microcline, and oligoclase with a few % biotite) experimentally deformed in axial compression at T = 900 degrees C, P = 1.5 GPa, and strain rate = 10-6/sec to about 50% shortening. The deformation behavior of the two feldspars is almost identical and so the rock can be idealized as a 2-phase aggregate, with isolated or dispersed quartz grains set in a continuous stress-supporting matrix of felspar. At these deformation conditions the quartz has deformed by climb-accomodated dislocation creep, which allows homogeneous flattening of the grains. |
