DescriptionThe photo shows cleavage refraction in Martinsburg Formation near Middletown in southeastern New York. Steep spaced cleavage in sandstone refracts into slaty cleavage in overlying shale. This is a great example of different characters of cleavage in contrasting lithologies as well as cleavage refraction.
