Title | Staurolite from Fannin County, Georgia |
Description | These crystals of staurolite weathered out of a schist in Fannin County, Georgia. The largest is about 2.5 cm long. Staurolite typically forms tetragonal prisms with diamond shaped cross sections. The crystal in the center shows the end of a tetragonal prism with triangular terminating faces. The upper left crystal is twinned (made of two crystals intergrown) to form a cross of sorts. The upper right crystal is also made of two individual crystals, in this case grown together to give a bent appearance. Staurolite is Fe2Al9Si4O22(OH)2, and is common in medium-grade metamorphosed aluminum-rich rocks. |
