TitleThin section of siderite carbonatite
DescriptionCross polarized thin section of siderite carbonatite. The carbonate is variably grained; the coarser is apparently the older and the very fine grained the younger. Some of the coarser is siderite and shows hematite films along cleavages. Associated with fine grained carbonate (calcite) is chalcedonic quartz. Accessories are barite, pyrite, pyroclore, chlorite, flourite and turbid aggregates of a submicroscopic species that may be a rare earth carbonate.
