Title | Zircon (malacon), New York |
Description | Zircon, ZrSiO4, is found in many types of rock but is usually very fine grained and often overlooked. Zircon often contains radioactive elements and so may be metamict (altered due to radioactive decay). It also may become hydrated. Here it is mostly light brown-yellow and coarsely crystalline (up to 2 cm crystals) but highly altered. (The term malacon has been used in the past to describe highly altered brown zircon.) This sample is about 6 cm across. |
