| Description | This view shows a small pond in a Pingo in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, north slope of Alaska. Pingos are mounds of earth-covered ice found in the Arctic, subarctic, and Antarctica. They may be up to 70 meters tall, and frequently have a depression in the center. Large pingos may beas much as 2 kilometers in diameter. The term originated as the Inuit word for a small hill. Pingos are the result of freezing and thawing in areas underlain by permafrost. |
