DescriptionThis specimen of the Vasquez Fm. (Eocene-Oligocene), Tick Canyon, Newhall, California, is a very fine-grained, purple to gray siltstone. With a hand lens or microscope, it is possible to see specks of mica and other minerals besides the dominant quartz. In thin section, feldspar, chlorite, sericite and clay are recognizable. Very minor biotite, apatite, zircon, epidote and tourmaline are locally present. This sample is 9 cm across.
