TitleView of Mt. Whitney, Sierra Nevada Mountains, California
DescriptionMt. Whitney is characterized by a rocky summit where several granitic ridges seem to come together. Here we see Whitney (in the center distance) from about 8 miles to the west. Whitney, like most of the high peaks of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, is made of granites of the Sierra Nevada Batholith. The intrusive rocks of the Batholith consist of many individual plutons intruded from the Triassic through the Cretaceous periods.
