Title | Comparison of granite (left) and arkose (right) |
Description | These samples of granite (on left) and arkose (on right) both contain the same minerals: predominately quartz and K-feldspar. Granite is an igneous rock, so the crystals interlock in a mosaic-like pattern. Arkose is a detrital sedimentary rock, so the crystals are piled together like grains of sand. The red color of both is due to iron oxidation. These samples are part of the Petrology teaching collection of the Department of Geology at the University of North Dakota. |
