The Hermit Shale is made up of thin-bedded shales, red to maroon in color, siltstones, and fine-grained mudstones. Most of the red staining seen in the lower units of the Grand Canyon are due to the Hermit Shale. The Hermit Shale represents a savannah type environment. |
