TitleLooking down into the Black Canyon at Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park
DescriptionIn Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, the Gunnison River cuts through 2-billion year old Precambrian rock. The overlooks along the South Rim Drive in the National Park offer excellent views down into the canyon. Metamorphic rock dominates the canyon walls, primarily gneiss. The gneiss is cut by many pegmatite dikes and blobs. The pegmatite has granitic composition, and in many places appears pink because the granite contains large pink K-feldspar crystals.
