Title | Selma Chalk (Cretaceous), Oktibbeha Co., Mississippi, USA |
Description | This soft, fine grained, earthy rock is composed almost entirely of calcite. It appears homogeneous in hand specimen. Most limestones form by precipitation and thus are considered chemical sedimentary rocks. This rock, however, contains clastic material: in thin section, foraminifera shells and fragments of larger fossils can be seen. The photo is about 10 cm across. |
