TitleCorundum
DescriptionCorundum, Al2O3 (aluminum oxide), is a very hard mineral. Its hardness can be partially attributed to the strong and short oxygen-aluminum bonds. This specimen, 2 cm across, is not particularly attractive, although it does show corundum's hexagonal symmetry. Beautiful gem varieties of corundum are ruby and sapphire.
