TitleHematite showing botryoidal habit
DescriptionHematite is an important iron ore mineral. Large quantities are mined and it is the source of roughly 90 percent of all iron mined in the United States. Hematite is typically massive, in fine grained aggregates, or forms as coatings on other minerals. The dark brown and red colors shown here are typical, but many other colors are possible. Some hematite samples have a botryoidal (grape-like) or kidney-shaped habit. This specimen, 20 cm across, shows both.
